Material Donations Procedure

Materials Donation 

Thank you for donating to the Lone Cone Library. Donations help support our collection and community access to shared resources. Because the Library has limited space and staff capacity, we are unable to accept items that require repair, cleaning, sorting, or disposal.

Items must be: 

  • Free of mildew, mold, stains, insects, excessive dust, water damage and/or strong odors
  • Intact, with no missing pages or covers and structurally sound (no severe spine damage)
  • Unaltered (no pages cut or removed)

What We Accept

  • Hardcover and paperback books (fiction and nonfiction), including gently used children’s books
  • Pre-ISBN books
  • Travel books published within the last 4 years
  • DVDs (Must be operable and include original artwork and cases)
  • Large Print books

Items We Are Unable to Accept

  • Dictionaries, thesauri, encyclopedias (including Britannica and World Book), or incomplete reference sets
  • Academic journals or literary criticism collections
  • Activity books (coloring books, crossword books, etc.)
  • Books published by magazines, e.g. National Geographic, TV Guide
  • Periodicals 
  • Case law, procedural law books, law codes, or statutes
  • LP records, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, or music CDs
  • Software sets
  • Book club editions
  • Harlequin romance novels
  • The Modern Library series, Reader’s Digest condensed books, Marquis Who’s Who
  • Computer, business, current events, medical books, custom course packets or textbooks
  • Items stored outside the home (garages, barns, sheds) or with environmental damage or contaminants

Where and When to Donate

Donations must be made during regular library hours and surrendered directly to staff. Items left outside the Library or dropped off after hours cannot be accepted and will be discarded.

  • Small donations (1–2 bags or boxes) may be dropped off during open hours.
  • Larger donations must be approved in advance. Please call to schedule an appointment. 970-327-4833
  • Ownership of all donated items transfers fully to the Lone Cone Library at the time of donation, and donated items cannot be returned once accepted.
  • Donated materials are accepted as-is and processed at the Library’s discretion.
  • Lone Cone Library has the right to refuse any donation.
